HongKongJunks.com ,which has been running as a directory site since 2009, got an upgrade this week. The main change is a brand new logo designed by Fast Media’s new Art Director, Sammy Ko, which takes inspiration from classic travel posters of the 1930s. Nice job Sammy!

For anyone who cares about Asia’s trade in endangered wildlife… Please click the above link to Paddy Brown’s forthcoming photobook. Paddy is an awesome photographer and this book is the monumental culmination of 10 years investigative work across the region. In an era of 30-second news reports, it is an astonishing piece of work.

Above Sai Kung sells out in two months!

Above Sai Kung, Fast Media’s first book publication, has pretty much sold out.

We printed 1,500 in November and have a total of 88 left now. We have decided not to refill bookshops as they run out, so the only way to be sure of getting a copy is to buy from HKAerial.com. (We will post it anywhere in the world.)

Big thanks to everyone who helped make the book such a huge success. Especially, the bookshops who partnered with us (thanks Ursula of Sai Kung Dymocks) and the cafe’s and bars who sold copies from behind the bar.

And, of course, thanks to everyone who bought a copy.

Southside Magazine launches

This September Fast Media launched its second magazine – Southside.

The monthly is based on the same formula that has made Sai Kung Magazine a huge success: world class editorial, super-local content, ninja-like distribution and the lowest CPM ads anywhere in Hong Kong. But Southside has some added extras…. Continue reading »

Annie accidentally put my iPhone in the washing machine. At first, it seemed dead.  Very dead. It was dripping soapy water, cracked and covered in scratches from a vicious spin cycle.

The iPhone 3 might blend, but surely it does not wash. How wrong we were…

How to revive your iPhone after putting it in the washing machine

Here’s how to save your iPhone after you find it in the bottom of your washing machine:

  1. Run it under a cold tap for a while to get rid of the soapy water.
  2. Give is a good shake
  3. Take out the sim card and open up the iPhone to “air” for a night.
  4. Then, put it in a ziplock bag full of rice. We used basmati!
  5. Leave for three days. The uncooked rice will draw all the moisture out of the iPhone.
  6. Reassemble, gluing on any bits that got washed off. We used sticky tape to hold the volume button in place.
  7. Plug it in and recharge
  8. Press activate button.
  9. Cross your fingers.

Helicopter photo mission over Sai Kung

This weekend, Jane Steer, Graham Uden, Aani and me hired a helicopter to go photograph Sai Kung Country Park from the air.

It is our second flight over Sai Kung & Clearwater Bay this year. The plan is to assemble enough pictures for a book. Last time we focused on houses and residential enclaves in Clearwater Bay & Sai Kung. This time we focused on the park, the islands, reservoir and the golf course.

Jane, who has years of experience sailing the area, was in charge of navigation. With the doors of the helicopter removed and wearing special safety harnesses, Graham and Aani rattled off more than 2,000 pictures as we buzzed over Sai Kung for an hour. All of these shots will be available to buy through our joint venture HKAerial.com.

Meanwhile, I was crammed into the corner of the helicopter with only a small service window for a view. So my pictures aren’t so great. But they giev some idea of the thrill of the ride.
